City Center

City Center is the most recent moniker of sound-artist Fred Thomas. Thomas has been deeply immersed in the d.i.y. music scene for the last 15 years, self-releasing records of his own and other artists, working as producer and touring worldwide. City Center is a sonic patchwork embodying an uneasy dream, made up of treated vocal loops, ambient noise and colliding layers of bass, exotic percussion and indiscernible sampled sounds. Constantly shifting forms of community and challenging the barrier between audience and performer have been themes, manifesting themselves in a violent, trance-like live show and occasional uninvited audience collaboration via live sampling. Thomas spent a long time in Michigan, and now resides in Brooklyn.

Apart from a few tours, including spots at both CMJ and South By Southwest festivals, City Center has played mostly in New York, with highlights including an opening party performance at Deitch Projects for the Assume Vivid Astro Focus collective and a show at John Zorn's experimental woodshed The Stone.
